An AI lab that built a new kind of AI, deployed first in energy markets.
Wakeline built a continual-learning architecture that learns while it runs, with no pretraining, no retraining and at CPU cost. We see continual learning as a fundamental building block of general intelligence, and so as a real path toward AGI.
The argument
-
Intelligence is a process in time: expect, act, observe, revise. A system that only executes a learned mapping does the second step and skips the rest.
-
Generality is not breadth. A system that performs across many domains but cannot revise what it knows in light of consequence is executing, not understanding.
-
Storing experience in the same weights that compute is why today’s AI needs a predefined loss and a retraining cycle, and scale does not change that. New knowledge has to be kept apart from old.
-
A general system must stay coupled to what it does not yet know, rather than collapse uncertainty into fixed outputs.
-
So a system that cannot keep learning while it operates cannot become general. Continual learning is the half of intelligence that training leaves out, so it is the first thing to build, and it is tested in real environments before any larger claim.
What we have measured
-
Production
Market Edge has forecast day-ahead electricity prices continuously in production since April 2026, currently from 83 parallel input streams.
-
Empirical
In a historical backtest covering 2,097 days in the German-Luxembourg power market, Market Edge achieved 14 percent higher cumulative trading P&L than the TabPFN baseline. Most of the advantage comes from regime shifts. This is a backtest result, not a measure of live trading returns.
-
Empirical
In a simulated stock market, an instance found a rule nobody had told it about, from outcomes alone, and found it again each time the rule changed. In a simulated road network, an instance learned to predict traffic and to act on its predictions while conditions changed.
-
Theoretical
Our arguments from first principles on continual learning and general intelligence are on the Research page, labelled as theory.
Where it runs
We are putting the AI into a select few companies in chosen industries, to see how it performs there.
-
Energy
Energy came first. Market Edge has been in production since April 2026 and is our largest deployment to date.
-
Manufacturing
We are working on a production-planning use case with a production-planning software company, and we are looking for design partners.
-
Healthcare
We are working on one project in healthcare with a partner. The project is confidential.
Who works on it
Our scientists come from physics, nonlinear dynamics, computer science and neuroscience. The founders are Tim Gülke (CEO), Jan Böggering (CFO), Simon Sprünker (CTO) and Merten Tiedemann (Principal Technical Advisor).
The company
- Wakeline GmbH was founded in October 2025.
- Our offices are in Düsseldorf and Hamburg.
- We raised €2.1M pre-seed from TechVision Fonds, neoteq ventures and angel investors.
